Jewel Heritage

A few days back I had the pleasure of interviewing two young creative designers, who are based in Birmingham UK.

Sisters Amina and Zorra Khan, joined forces to create unusual, obscure and more than often, dark and sinister pieces of jewellery under the brand name Jewel Heritage.

I have worked with Zorra in the past, helping to create a design for her blog/brand The Candy Bitches. We worked in creating The Travis Barker tee, which was released in limited numbers a couple of years back.

Please enjoy the interview.

Hi guys please give a little introduction about yourselves.

We are sisters, one trained in the art of illustration and the other in fashion design who have come together to create the brand Jewel Heritage, which for all those unfamiliar with the name is an independent British jewellery label.

Where did the concept of Jewel Heritage come from?

The concept as cliché as this sounds came from a want/need depending on how you look at it. It started off with not being able to find a particular style of ring and the options I had available to me especially in my budget were lackluster and it just clicked, if I cannot find what I want then I must create what I want. Both of us come from a design background, we are pretty resourceful so we put all our efforts into it and thus Jewel Heritage was born.

Do you guys do this full time or part time

We both work full time in our 9-5 jobs and do this on a part time basis at the moment. But the response we have had encourages us to take this full time as soon as we can.

Does the brand focus solely on jewellry or are you thinking of branching into other areas?

We really want to branch out design wise but if we do it won’t be under the umbrella of Jewel Heritage. It would be a separate endeavor.

What are your main roles within the brand

Amina: Main focuses are behind the scenes, I deal with the production side as well as the design.
Zorra: Design and the marketing side the brand.

What inspires you guys?

Nothing beats your imagination and the feeling that you can achieve anything.

What are the steps from an idea being initially sketched to the final product being made?

The whole process is literally hands on I personally do not like to use computers. Both our minds go into overdrive and think of what we would like to see on a ring, necklace and so forth. Then we go for it with pencil and paper, it is then hand carved which can take upto 6 weeks depending on how intricate the design is and a few extra finishes here and there then hey presto you have your product.

With you guys being sisters is there any sibling rivalry when it comes to which designs will make the cut and which will get scrapped?

We can rely on each other to point on the weaknesses in designs, it can be harsh but honesty is what is needed in order to develop the product and make it the best we possibly can.

Who would you most like to collaborate with and why?

Talented like minded people, not necessarily a household name.

Name your all time 5 favourite fashion brands?

Zorra: I don’t have 5 but I love the consistency of Marc Jacobs.
Amina: I’m not fussy at all I’ll wear anything as long as it isn’t Primark. But with regards to design and pushing boundaries there are too many to mention.

What would you like to achieve within the next year?

We will have a full collection out, well several. To get our brand out there on platforms like Vogue, Grazia etc magazines we read and respect and in all honesty just keep pushing the boundaries of jewellery design, producing affordable as well as luxurious pieces.

Where can people pick up some of your amazing jewellry?

From our official site www.jewelheritage.com and our first official stocklist over at www.studdedandstoned.com

Any final shout outs to give?

To God, to anyone who has ever brought something from us and supported us from the start. It means a lot. *high five*
